Fresh prawns, which have been caught by local coastal fishermen in the area of ​​Porsanger, Laksefjorden or Varangerfjorden. The prawns come from an environmentally certified and sustainable fishery.

Food safety and quality

We are subject to strict requirements to ensure food safety. It is a system consisting of several bodies, which together control and monitor that the requirements are met at all stages of the production chain. The bodies that control the food are the Norwegian Food Safety Authority, the National Institute for Nutrition and Seafood Research (NIFES), the Directorate of Fisheries and the Ministry of Trade and Fisheries. A Norwegian standard has been defined (NS 9409:2009) which must be followed when prawns are delivered with the Norske Reker quality mark.

Norwegian prawns

Norwegian prawns like themselves best in cold, clean water, which means that they grow and mature slowly. Prawns are a raw material for every occasion, they have a fresh taste, firm meat and a natural pink colour.

Did you know?

  • that shrimp begins its life as a male, and when it is from two to four years old it changes sex to female.
  • that prawns mate in the autumn, and the female prawn carries the roe under her back throughout the winter.
  • that in the spring the prawns seek out shallower water where the larvae hatch.

 

The Porsangerfjord is a fjord in Finnmark that stretches between Porsanger and Nordkapp municipality. The fjord is Finnmark’s longest fjord, and is also Norway’s fourth longest fjord.

Laksefjorden, which is Finnmark’s third longest fjord, is located in Lebesby municipality.

Both of these fjords have historically been fjords rich in fish where the coastal population has supported themselves for several generations. These fjords also contain cold water prawns of the highest quality.

Admittedly, the prawns are not the same size as the popular Varanger prawns which are fished in the east right up to the border with Russia. But the taste is perfect and the appearance is delicate.

The towns around these fjords are therefore privileged to be able to enjoy these wonderful raw materials that we have right outside our homes.
